Going salmon fishing always seemed like great fun….until the 0400 wake up. But I remember the smell of the cold damp early morning air, of low tide, and of the kerosene heater we had on the boat as we trolled back and forth between Cabin Point and the lime kiln on the west side of Orcas. I don't recall ever catching any fish (Jones curse??)-- but whenever I smell kerosene exhaust, I am taken back to those early mornings.

The 'pink' salmon run up by Stuart Island was a ton of fun....and I think uniquely well suited to the Jones'. I recall Grandpa being left speechless at the pace of landing salmon...and Dad laughing hysterically at the methodology.
It may have been a separate fishing trip with Dad, but just on the other side of Turn Point (in the photo above) I remember a pod of Orca whales showed up with similar intentions to ours (catching Pink salmon)....to say that the 'vibe changed' would be a severe understatement.
great photos <3
I remember fishing a couple times on the west side of Orcas at the unofficially dubbed "Tim's point", on the east side of Crane Island when he lived at Pole Pass, and from his dock at Pole Pass.
Sometimes it seemed like the only thing down there were dogfish sharks.
I guess I didn't get the fishing genes – in the Stuart Island photos below, Jubal caught 6 huge salmon in a couple hours, and I caught zero!
